| Adrian Noble, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed Twelfth Night, in the 1997-1998 Stratford season (which started on 25 November, 1997). This production stars Scott Handy as Orsino, Stephen Boxer as Feste, Philip Voss as Malvolio, Helen Schlesinger as Viola and Clare Holman as Olivia. This production's costumes were set variously in the late 40s and the early 30s. Most of the men's costumes were early '30s, while the women's were most definitely late 40s, early 50s. Although this made a pleasant and colourful effect, for costume afficiandos it was a bit confusing. This play also emphasized the Unity of Time, implying that all the action took place in one day (with the use of a rounded ladder and a globe which moved according to what time of the day it was supposed to be). The Orsino was amusingly effeminate: a wannabe Romantic in Velvet. There was a hysterical interpretation of the end scene where Orsino almost kisses Sebastian instead of Viola .. this was done extremely well and had the audience in hysterics! Viola was a little more spiteful then she is normally played, but the Olivia was a complete loss: it seemed as if she was supposed to be a mere Barbie doll with no depth. Feste was the most amusing with a colorful costume and vocal changes that made all the others seem monotone. Above all, however, this production emphasized colour and lots of it!
