| Dominic Rowan played Proteus in Edward Hall's 1998 production at RSC Stratford. Rowan played a difficult role marvelously, keeping the attention riveted to his character's transformations. Nevertheless, a muttered "Proteus, you bastard" was oft heard wafting from the audience. Rowan's performance was truly wonderful: character simpatico, boo-worthy villain, repentent penitent (?!): a would-be rapist whose forgiven in the end. His performance was so electrifying that I was moved to stand up and yell at him in the end. I must also add that this was the first time I had ever seen this play, nevermind reading it. Thus when Goodman-Hill's Valentine offers "all that is good in Silvia" to Proteus, I was outraged to the point of enthusiasm. Rowan was accompanied by several fascinating portrayls, including Poppy Miller's Silvia, Tom Goodman-Hill's Valentine, Lesley Vickerage's Julia, Joun Dougall's Speed, Mark Hadfield as Launce and Cassie as Crab the dog. The latter stole the show with her alternate pugilistic attitude to the audience (and a servant) and affection for her master.
