Olivier as a King ...
Sir Laurence Olivier's 1944 version was directly affected by World War II. Therefore, it is the most intensely patriotic version of the play. It premiered at the Carlton Theatre in England. Some of the extras were played by actual wounded soldiers. Also, some were played by American and Irish soldiers. The BBC show "Conjuring Shakespeare" noted that you could tell the Americans apart from the others because they wore their hats at an angle. The set was designed from pictures from the Books of Hours. The battle scenes were shot in Neutral Ireland because of the war, and made up the bulk of the half a million pound cost of the film.
