Come, go with me apart; I will withdraw.

For the fair devil. Now art thou my lieutenant.

Paul Robeson
Despite his leftist political views in a time of great conservatism (and pre-Civil Rights!), Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was still a celebrated actor and singer. He performed Othello at the Savoy in 1930 opposite Peggy Ashcroft as his Desdemona, New York in 1943 and Stratford in 1959. His beautiful bass-baritone voice was heard in many musicals as well, but his political beliefs (and admiration of the Soviet Union) got him into much trouble and he spent his declining years roaming the globe.
