| This film was not Othello in as much as it was centred around the performing of the play. It was set during the days of the first women actors on stage and how this effected the fortunes of the male actors who had had a monopoly on such roles. The main male character usually plays female roles and is especially known for his Desdemona. With the advent of the woman actor, however, he makes a difficult and gradual change to playing male characters, with his performance of Othello dominating the end of the movie. There is also a historical basis for Desdemona's fight referred to in the film, a foreshadowing of method acting, and a rumination of artifice versus naturalism (in acting as well as letting women play).
