"Red wig and false nose delineated the unsentimentalized Shylock of [Poel's] 1898 production, where the unlocalized playing space aspired to recapture the swift pace of an Elizabethan staging. This harsh interpretation was an exception to the overwhelming trend towards sympathy for Shylock as his motives were increasingly accorded moral justification" (Rebecca Brown, Shakespeare Birthplace Trust).
