Sian Reeves and Helen Schlesinger
Gregory Doran's 1997/98 Stratford production of The Merchant went back to some of the comedic elements of Shylock. Philip Voss' interpretation of this character was a disappointment to those who expected righteous anger, but did indeed cause laughter at his "Oh! my money! my daughter! my money!" However, the best surprise of the entire play was the staging which was effective and opulent without being excessive. The evocation of the splendor of Venice was magnificent. Joining Voss were Scott Handy as Bassanio, Helen Schlesinger as Portia, Dominic Rowan as Lorenzo and Emma Handy as Jessica.
