"O, that this too too solid flesh would melt,
Thaw and resolve itself into a dew!
Or that the Everlasting had not fix'd
His canon 'gainst self-slaughter! O God! God!
How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable
Seem to me all the uses of this world!" Act I, scene ii

Castle Rock Entertainment ; 1996 (Film) Starring : Reviewed on : 2001-09-30 14:15:55 | Essaying to put the entirety of Hamlet onto the screen, the final product of Kenneth Branagh's (1960 - ) version was well over four hours long and every bit as wonderful as the attempts that had gone before. Setting his Hamlet at the close of the nineteenth-century (much like 1996's Twelfth Night) Branagh's movie is a wonderful example of moviemaking at its best. Perhaps most wonderful of all, Branagh's Hamlet did not cast the other movie versions into the shade; preserving, perhaps, each movie version as wonderful in its own right. There are, however, a few minor quibbles; the most annoying one being the saber toss at Claudius near the end of the film. Ridiculous and unbelievable, this one item is forgotten when one remembers the lyrical mirror scene between Ophelia and Hamlet.
