Hamlet

"O, that this too too solid flesh would melt,
Thaw and resolve itself into a dew!
Or that the Everlasting had not fix'd
His canon 'gainst self-slaughter! O God! God!
How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable
Seem to me all the uses of this world!"
Act I, scene ii

Takako Matsu as Ophelia
From the 28th August to the 3rd of September 1998, Yukio Ninagawa presented his Japanese version of Hamlet in his native language at the Barbican in London. Starring Hiroyuki Sanada as Hamlet and Takako Matsu as Ophelia, the director who brought us the iconic Japanese samurai Macbeth vividly portrayed Hamlet's struggle. His curious melding of the Japanese and English culture made this production an intriguing if slightly lacklustre Hamlet. My onlly quibble with the production was the abrupt departure from a distinctly Japanese feel in the first half to a sudden English Renaissance evocation with the Laertes-Hamlet final duel (the usual: white flowing shirts with tight black trousers and rapiers). Jarring in an otherwise flawless production.
